HTML1 was the great democratizer. Suddenly, a kid in a basement could launch a personal page that looked — not ironically — competitively like the portfolio of a Fortune 500 brand. There were no forms to fill, no panels to convince. The page was the performance. The only filter was whether you could show up with intent.
For the first time in history, creation didn't need a commission of prohibitive permissions to be realized.
Sycophants in Control Panels
However, as with every public square worth its salt, the usual suspects came knocking.
Dictatorial governments. Legacy media agencies. Centralized financial conglomerates. Dogmatic arts institutions. Statist universities. All with their elite-funded plugins and publishing monopolies. They slid in with smiles and “guidelines,” eventually installing systems of invisible compliance — rules written in cumbersome interfaces, not legislation. "Airworthy" content, as they saw it, had to pass their checklists. Their jargon. Their PR gloss. Their licensed tools.
The systems that these figures have approved reflect the very nature of their creators: people driven by crude formalities, locked in rituals of passive-aggressive correction, endlessly sharpening the corners of rules no one sane respects. Their environments reward sycophancy and penalize originality. Tiny status games became battlegrounds. Meetings spiral into power theater. The resulting digital spaces that they had rolled out carry all of this residue in their very essence — stiff, joyless and loaded with silent punishments for any attempt at spontaneity or warmth.

Their power came from these sources. And for a while, they succeeded in hijacking the narrative.
